ATV vs. UTV: What's the Difference?
If you’ve ever been shopping for powersport vehicles, then you’ve probably heard the terms “ATV” and “UTV” being thrown around. ATV stands for all-terrain vehicle and UTV stands for utility task vehicle, but what’s the difference? At Redline Powersports Commonwealth, we’re here to help you understand the difference and determine which machine is best for your lifestyle.
Read on to learn more about ATVs and UTVs!
What is an ATV?
An ATV, all-terrain vehicle, is typically designed to carry only its operator, is steered by handlebars, and is made for off-road travel. Their four-wheel drive makes it easier to tackle rugged terrain and can make tighter, sharper turns to easily navigate narrow trails.
ATVs are categorized by two different types: Type I and Type II. Type I ATVs are designed by the manufacturer to only be used by a single operator with no passengers. Type II ATVs are designed to be used by an operator and a single passenger, outfitted with designated seats for each.
ATVs also come in a variety of models and specific models for certain age groups. It is important to choose the correct model for you age, especially if you’re purchasing for a younger rider. Youth ATV models are designed for smaller bodies, hands, and feet, and only travel up to a certain speed that is safer and more appropriate for younger operators.
What is a UTV?
A UTV, utility task vehicle, is a large, “side-by-side” vehicle that allows room for a passenger. This vehicle is highly capable of conquering terrain and being used for towing and hauling. Some UTVs are designed for off-roading, while others are designed for more heavy-duty purposes like farm work.
The Difference
While both vehicles stand on four wheels and can be a lot of fun on the trails, there are a few key differences that set them apart.
Power & Body Style
ATVs are typically powered by a gas engine. UTVs are usually powered by diesel or electric engines and travel at speeds between 25 to 50 miles per hour. UTVs are built with a roll cage and a windshield, while an ATV is equipped with handlebars and a single seat that the operator straddles to drive.
Uses & Capabilities
Both vehicles have the ability to tow, but UTVs are known for their towing and hauling capabilities, especially for bigger jobs that may not be easily accessible by truck. ATVs are great for riding trails, hunting, or camping, as they are very agile. UTVs are usually equipped with a large amount storage space which makes them great for hauling whatever you need.
Passengers
If you’re driving a Type II ATV, you’ll be able to carry one passenger with you. Otherwise, with a Type I ATV, the seat is only designed to hold the operator. UTVs are often called “side-by-sides” because of the driver’s seat and passenger seat sitting side-by-side. UTVs are usually designed to carry two to six passengers, depending on how large of a UTV you purchase.
Price
UTVs are generally more expensive than ATVs, as UTVs are larger, heavier vehicles.
How to Choose Between an ATV or a UTV
Your lifestyle, budget, number of passengers, and amount of cargo you plan to haul are all variables to consider when shopping for your new machine. If you’re looking for something to ride on your land, but are working with a tighter budget, an ATV is probably right for you. On the other hand, if you’re needing to haul cargo and have a bigger budget, then you may consider a UTV.
ATV Pros:

ATV Cons:
- Less comfort
- Not suitable for passengers

- Less towing capacity
UTV Pros:
